A £70,000 fundraising goal
The Bolton-born comedian and presenter helped develop the Steak & McGuinness Pie with Greenhalgh's, which is based in Lostock, Bolton. All profits from the pie will go to the two hospices, which will share the money raised through the bakery's "£70k for 70 Years" campaign, also known as "70 for 70".
For Derian House in Chorley, Lancashire, the fundraising comes alongside annual running costs of £6 million this year. The hospice provides care free of charge to families and supports more than 400 babies, children and young people from across the North West of England.
Stuart, a representative for Derian House, welcomed the partnership between a local business and a well-known Bolton figure. He described the pie as a winner and said their support helps keep the hospice open for children, young people and their families.
What's in the pie and where to buy it
Priced at £3.65, the pie combines steak with a rich gravy made using Guinness Extra Stout, enclosed in Greenhalgh's pastry. The bakery describes it as its version of a traditional steak and ale pie.
Customers can buy it at all Greenhalgh's stores, from its sandwich vans or online.
McGuinness said: "In the north of England we know a thing or two about pies. Up north we don't just say thank you, we bake you a pie. If eating one helps raise £70,000, I'm in."
Taste tests at both hospices
At Derian House, young people and staff gave the pie an enthusiastic reception. Liam, 24, said everything about it was great, while staff members described the taste as divine and the pie as extremely good.
Arron Taylor, who works with young people at the hospice, said he was surprised that a pie from Bolton could taste so good, having previously associated pies of that quality only with Wigan.
Bolton Hospice published its own verdict on October 26, 2026, after patients, staff and volunteers tried the pie. They praised its "real homemade feel" and "true taste of Guinness", awarded it five stars in a vote and declared it "officially Bolton Hospice approved".
