Painter's Comeback Continues as Phillies Extend Winning Streak to Eight with Rout of Cardinals
Andrew Painter turned in his longest outing since returning from a two-year absence, and Kyle Schwarber continued his power surge as the Philadelphia Phillies crushed the St. Louis Cardinals 12-3 on Saturday night, extending their winning streak to eight games.
Painter, who missed the entire 2023 and 2024 seasons recovering from Tommy John surgery after being diagnosed with a UCL tear in March 2023, worked seven innings of one-run ball in a milestone performance at Citizens Bank Park. The 23-year-old right-hander scattered five hits and struck out eight batters, demonstrating the form that made him the Phillies' top pitching prospect before his injury.
Schwarber provided the offensive firepower with his 38th home run of the season, a solo shot in the eighth inning that leads all of Major League Baseball. The power display continues an impressive trend for Schwarber, who led the National League with 46 home runs in 2024.
Phillies Offense Erupts Early
Philadelphia wasted no time building a commanding lead. Edmundo Sosa delivered a two-run double in the opening frame, part of a night where every Phillies starter recorded at least one hit. The assault continued in the third inning when Alec Bohm and Sosa both singled and scored as part of a four-run explosion that put the game out of reach.
Bryce Harper, the 2021 National League MVP and nine-time All-Star, added a three-run blast in the sixth inning for his 26th home run of the season. Bohm finished with two hits and scored twice, while Sosa contributed two hits of his own in the balanced offensive attack.
Painter's Remarkable Turnaround
The performance marked a dramatic reversal of fortune for Painter, who improved to 3-8 on the season. After being demoted in June following a brutal 12-4 loss to Miami—his eighth defeat in nine decisions with an ERA above seven—the young right-hander has found his rhythm. Since returning to the big leagues on July 31, Painter has posted a 2-0 record across five starts, lowering his ERA to 6.04.
The seven-inning effort represented not just his longest outing of 2026, but a significant milestone in his comeback from major elbow surgery that sidelined him for two full seasons.
Cardinals Struggle with Pitching Crisis
St. Louis turned to highly touted left-handed prospect Quinn Mathews for his third big-league start after Hunter Dobbins became the second Cardinals starter in as many days to land on the injured list. The Stanford product and two-time All-American, selected 60th overall in the 2023 MLB Draft, struggled through five innings.
Mathews surrendered seven earned runs on 10 hits, with all the damage coming in the first three frames before he settled down. He did manage three strikeouts, all against Harper, though the Phillies slugger exacted revenge with his sixth-inning three-run homer off reliever Ryan Fernandez.
JJ Wetherholt provided the lone bright spot for the Cardinals with a solo home run in the eighth inning, his 17th of the year.
The two-time defending National League East champions will look to complete the sweep when right-hander Kyle Leahy takes the mound for St. Louis against Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sánchez in Sunday's series finale.
